Salmon: For and Against
After the investigations that proved the salmon improve functioning of the heart, there appeared the data that eating this fish leads to cancer.

Investigators advise to check the origin of the fish you eat. They say that the toxin level in salmon may be more than norm.

The reason is that on fish farms they feed salmon with local fish with dirt mineral oil additions. Some farms changed to vegetable oil additions, but it has negative influence to fish health.

The dirtying level depends of the region. The highest toxin level is in the fish from Europe and the lowest is in the fish from the South Africa.

Salmon is reach with fatty acids, it raises the “good” cholesterol level (HDL). Medicals advise to eat fat fish at least twice a week. So, in spite of the risk, the advantage of eating salmon is very considerable.

Scientists say that they do not appeal to refuse eating salmon, but they ask for being more attentive with it.

Study Finds Coffee Reduces Liver Risk
Coffee and tea may reduce the risk of serious liver damage in people who drink alcohol too much, are overweight, or have too much iron in the blood, researchers reported on Sunday.

The study of nearly 10,000 people showed that those who drank more than two cups of coffee or tea per day developed chronic liver disease at half the rate of those who drank less than one cup each day.

The study, conducted by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases and Social & Scientific Systems, Inc., found that coffee provided no protection to people at risk of liver disease from other causes, such as viral infections.

“While it is too soon to encourage patients to increase their coffee and tea intake, the findings of our study potentially offer people at high-risk for developing chronic liver disease a practical way to decrease that risk,” said Dr. Constance Ruhl, who helped lead the study.

“In addition, we hope the findings will offer guidance to researchers who are studying liver disease progression.”

Writing in the American Gastroenterological Association journal Gastroenterology, Ruhl and colleagues said caffeine seemed to hold the key.

They analyzed the records of 9,849 participants in a government survey whose coffee and tea intake was evaluated and who were followed for about 19 years.

Forget bird flu and enjoy Thanksgiving
On the last Thursday of November in USA people celebrate Thanksgiving Day.

It is the day, when all the family gather together round the feast table.

Thanksgiving meal is a time to renew and relax. Renewal comes with new faces at the table and new opportunities and adventures shared in conversation with those we care about the most.

Relaxation is more than the requisite nap that follows any big meal. It’s the moment a day of kitchen chaos crescendoes into the call to dinner.

The symbol of this day is Turkey. Poultry breeders fatten their turkeys specially for this holiday.

If talk of bird flu has slightly quelled your appetite for juicy, scrumptious Thanksgiving turkey, you can rest easy with the thought that most of the turkeys in grocery stores are home-bred.

If you are still not convinced, consider alternatives. Tofurkey for example, is a non-meat option and is widely available.

Typically, tofurkey is made from tofu mixed with wheat protein, and its texture and taste can get close to the real deal.

Tofu turkey will, of course, deprive you of the joy of drumsticks, but it will also won’t leave you so sleepy after dinner.

And here are some recipes of dishes with Turkey

Some Statistics
A United Press International survey finds Dutch cooks prepare meals the fastest and women are in the kitchen more often.

A look at cooking habits of 14,000 people in 27 European, Asian and North American countries found the Dutch average 40 minutes to cook a meal, Expatica reports.

The survey, commissioned by furniture dealer IKEA, showed Russians spend the most time in the kitchen, averaging 90 minutes a meal.

The survey average was 61 minutes.

Men made up a small percentage of the cooks and when they were in the kitchen, most were bachelors.

Women were found to be the cooks 85 percent of the time.
